Description

Box Cottage is an 18th-century cottage located on Chalkcroft Lane in Penton Mewsey. The front (west) elevation is symmetrical, featuring one storey and an attic, with two windows. The cottage has rendered walls built on a cob base and a thatched roof. The roof is half-hipped at the south end, with eaves raised above the upper windows and lowered in the centre to form the wide roof of an open porch supported by posts. Casement windows are present, along with a 6-panelled front door with two glazed panels at the top. The rear of the cottage displays a late 19th-century exterior with a slate roof and two stories. The interior includes a wide chimney breast, with a kitchener and an old bread oven, along with other original fittings. A high wall, constructed of rendered cob on a flint and brick base and capped with tiles, is situated on the north side of the forecourt, returning along part of the front.
