Description
The Old Cottage is a late-medieval timber-framed house located in Vermhams Dean, Upton. Originally built as a two-bay cottage, it likely had a third bay added in the 16th century when fireplaces were constructed at each end. The cottage was re-clad in the late 18th century and extended at the north end, with a 20th-century addition at the south end, along with various improvements and alterations over time. The exterior features flint walls with brick dressings and a combination of thatch and tile roofing. The building has one storey and an attic, with four windows above five. The lower roof at the north end has been tiled in the 20th century and includes a hip and a flat-roofed dormer, while the remainder is thatched and features three eyebrow dormers. The roof has been extended forward to create a canopy over the entrance. The windows are casements, and there is a plain doorway. Inside, the cottage showcases exposed framing, reflecting its growth and changes throughout its history.
