Description
Numbers 8 and 9 Market Place are early 18th-century buildings that were originally one house. They have a similar height to the adjacent No 7 but are set back slightly, with a roof that has a lower ridge line and a hip at the north end. The roof is now covered with modern tiles. The buildings are three storeys tall, although the attic storey has been removed. The upper floors feature four narrow windows with rubbed brick voussoirs that are cut in a wavy pattern. The sash windows have moulded architrave frames, and the first and second floor windows in No 9 do not have glazing bars.
On the ground floor of No 8, there is an early 19th-century six-panel house door set in a round-arched panelled reveal, accompanied by a glazed fanlight with an oval glazing pattern to the left (south). There is a central glazed shop door and window, which includes glazing bars, to the north, framed by Doric pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice that extends across half of the front and is broken forward over the centre and northern part. No 9 features a modern shop front with an early 19th-century Doric surround that includes fluted pilasters.
All the listed buildings in Corn Market and Market Place are part of a group.
