Description
Gavelacre Farmhouse is a large house mainly from the early 18th century, though it has earlier origins and has undergone renovations and extensions in the late 19th and late 20th centuries. It is constructed of brick with a tile roof and features a nearly symmetrical front and rear, with recessed centers that were brought forward during the later renovations. The house has two storeys and an attic, with a window arrangement of 2-2-2. Each side has hipped roofs, and the center has a parapet. The walls are built in English bond, with slightly cambered openings and a plinth. The windows are sashes in exposed frames.
The doorway features an arch created by a plain architrave, with 20th-century panelled reveals. The entrance is set back in line with the old front wall and has an architrave and a six-panelled door, two of which are top-glazed with patterned bars. The rear of the house is similar, with a gable at the center that has a stepped stack above a hipped-roofed verandah supported by five turned baluster poles, and a half-glazed door. There are late 20th-century extensions at each end, designed in a similar style.
Inside, the farmhouse showcases panelling from three different periods: 16th-century linen-fold in the stairwell, 17th-century panelling in one room, and early 18th-century panelling in another. The 17th-century dog-leg staircase features slatted balusters, and one fireplace incorporates 17th-century pilasters.
