Description
Monks Barn is a cottage that originally dates back to the 17th century. It features a timber-frame structure that was refaced and extended in the late 18th century, and remodeled in the mid-19th century in a Tudor style. The exterior is constructed of brick in English bond, with an old plain tile roof. The building has three bays and is one and a half stories tall, with full-height projecting porches at both ends and in the center, along with a 20th-century wing at the rear.
The front elevation has a window arrangement of 1.2.2.0 above 1.0.2.1, set on a plinth. The door is framed by a timber Tudor arch. The windows are casements, some made of cast iron, featuring diamond and square glazing patterns, and are placed under cambered arches. The porches are jettied on the first floor and are tile-hung with fishscale tiles. Gabled dormers with similar casements extend from the wallplate. A central 19th-century Tudor chimney stack has diagonally-set flues. Inside, the original timber-frame structure is virtually intact.
