Description

The Police House adjoining to the south-west of Romsey Police Station is a mid-19th century building. It is a one-storey structure with a hipped slate roof. The front projects slightly from the rest of the building and features some knapped flint, with red brick pilasters at both ends and in the center. At the west end, there is a three-light casement window set in double chamfered jambs, topped with a rubbed brick voussoir. The flat-arched doorway has a similar frame and contains a boarded wooden door with a small rectangular fanlight above, featuring lattice glazing.

To the north-east, the main part of the building consists of one bay that is also one storey high, with a two-light casement window. The central wing is two-storey, running north-west to south-east, and has a parapeted gable end facing the street, with brick tumbling and coping on the parapet. The slate roof is complemented by six brick rectangular stacks with chamfered edges, resting on a central square brick plinth.

There are two three-light casement windows with lattice work panes, featuring double brick jambs with chamfered edges, rubbed brick voussoirs, and brick dressings, along with hood moulds above. The painted stucco sills and a brick band at sill level add to the detailing. A similar window is located at the west end on the ground floor. In the attic, there is a stone plaque supported by corbels. The four-centred arched doorway has a door with vertical strip panelling, set deep within a recess with double jambs, also featuring chamfered edges, rubbed brick voussoirs, and brick dressings.

To the east, there is a one-storey extension that is slightly recessed, with a hipped slate roof. This extension includes one window and one flat-arched door, both framed similarly to those in the main building.
