Description

The Fordingbridge War Memorial Gates provide access to the Recreation Ground from Ringwood Road. They feature symmetrical gates with vertical bars and dog-rails, topped with ornamental work. The gates are mounted on stone piers that are approximately 3 meters tall, square in shape, and have cornices topped with stone balls. Curved railings flank each side and are supported by a dwarf brick wall with stone coping, which leads to end piers that are about 2.4 meters tall. In front of the two curving dwarf walls, there are small flower beds bordered by stone kerbs.

Each of the main piers displays a rectangular inscribed dedication tablet. The left tablet features the principal dedication along with 20 names, while the right tablet lists 37 names. The dedication reads: "THIS RECREATION GROUND IS A MEMORIAL TO THE MEN OF THE PARISH OF FORDINGBRIDGE, WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914-1918." Below each of the First World War name lists, there are later dedications to the fallen of the Second World War, with 10 names recorded on each pier.
