Description

Stowmarket War Memorial Gates are situated at the entrance to Stowmarket Recreational Ground on Finborough Road. The gates are attached to two brick pillars topped with corniced stone caps, each featuring a stone ball finial. The ornate wrought iron gates include spiked dog rails and intricate scroll-work, prominently displaying the town coat of arms. The left-hand gate has a panel that reads "MEMORIAL," while the right-hand panel states "GATES 1920."

Each gate features bronze panels that honor those who fell in the Second World War, inscribed with "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THOSE OF/ THIS TOWN WHO FELL IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)." Tall rectangular bronze plaques on each brick pier commemorate the First World War, stating "TO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF THIS TOWN/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ (NAMES)." Additional smaller plaques are attached to the piers.

On either side of the gate piers, secondary gates are installed for pedestrian access, connecting to ancillary brick piers with stone caps and ball finials. These are linked to low quadrant walls that support curved railings with similar spiked dog rails and decorative standards, which also terminate in brick piers with stone caps and ball finials.
