Description

Wellington House is a residential home for the elderly, originally built as a vicarage in 1660 and later used as a school. The building has been altered in the early 19th century. It was originally timber-framed but now features extensive early 19th-century brick cladding. The house has plain tile roofs and a south-west front that is two storeys high with five bays. In the centre, there is an early 20th-century gabled porch, flanked by two late 19th-century 2/2 sash windows on either side, all under gauged segmental arches. The first floor has five early 19th-century 6/6 sash windows, also under gauged segmental arches. The gabled roof is adorned with pierced ceramic cresting.

At the rear, there are two full-height gabled wings separated by a central gabled feature. The north-east wing has a substantial transverse 17th-century chimney stack, while the south-east wing features a ridge stack with four octagonal flues and an external gable-end stack with two octagonal flues.

Inside, the ground-floor south room has wave-moulded cruciform bridging beams and is fitted with large-framed panelling from the 18th century. The cellar door is an early 17th-century plank style, complete with lock and hinges. The 19th-century staircase has two turned balusters per tread, and the roof structure includes principals, moved collars, and curved windbraces.
