Description
Two houses, located at numbers 7 and 9 Tavern Street, Stowmarket, date from the early 18th century, with rear additions constructed around 1760. The front of the building was remodelled in the early 19th century. The houses are timber-framed, with plastered and colourwashed exteriors. They have mixed roofing materials: number 7 has artificial slate on the front and plain tiles to the rear, while number 9 has slate on the front and corrugated concrete tiles to the rear.
The building is two storeys high with a four-window front. A square carriage arch, leading to the rear, is situated between the two properties. Number 7 has a modern, half-glazed door and a sash window without glazing bars. Number 9 features a modern, half-glazed door flanked by two 8/8 sash windows dating from the 19th century. Four 8/8 sash windows are present on the first floor. The gabled roof consists of two pitches and has an eaves cornice with paired mutules. Internal gable-end stacks are visible; the eastern stack has been reduced in height.
Two late 18th-century brick wings extend to the rear; these feature modern casements on the ground floor and 8/8 sashes on the first floor. The interior of the carriage arch reveals a close-studded timber frame visible on both floors along the east wall, although the west side of the archway is constructed of brick. This demonstrates group value as a notable example of early 18th-century domestic architecture.
