Description
The Tithe Barn, part of the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket, is a Grade II* listed building dating from the 15th century. It was originally associated with the grange of the Abbot of St. Osyth and incorporates some reused timbers. The barn is timber-framed, with 19th-century weatherboard cladding and a pantiled roof. It was restored in the 1970s and features an aisled plan. The north side is plain, with only a single plank door, while the south side has double timber doors positioned to the right of the center, leading up to a sloping roof. At the west end, there are also double timber doors that rise only to the eaves.
Inside, the barn has six bays of arcade posts plus a narrow extra bay, with the posts supported by brick spurs. Tie beams are connected to the arcade posts and arcade plate with straight braces. Struts extend from the wall plate to the arcade posts, and queen struts rise from the ties to meet 20th-century purlins and collars. Most of the rafters are from the 20th century.
