Description

The Pelton Fell Cenotaph and memorial gates are located at the Station Lane entrance to the park. The gates feature a symmetrical design with sandstone gate piers from which iron gates hang. Each pier is topped with a cornice and adorned with a relief-carved wreath on the front. The tall, broad gates have plain vertical bars and a dog-rail on each side, with panels at the top displaying the years 1914 on the left and 1919 on the right, along with ornamental margents at either end.

The cenotaph, made of Heworth sandstone, stands approximately 9 centimeters tall at the intersection of footpaths in the park. It features a large stone block symbolizing the empty tomb, which is raised on the cornice of a broad, tapering pier. The pier has a decorated ovolo moulding at its base and stands on a rectangular plinth that is elevated on a three-stepped base. A wreath is carved in relief on both the front and rear faces of the pier.

The main dedicatory inscription is on a bronze plaque attached to the front of the plinth, which reads: "IN GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THOSE OF PELTON FELL AND DISTRICT WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 1919 (NAMES)." The names of those who served in the First World War continue on a similar stone plaque at the rear. A stone plaque on the front face of the pier commemorates the Second World War, stating: "IN MEMORY OF THOSE OF PELTON FELL & DISTRICT WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN WORLD WAR II 1939 – 1945 (NAMES)."
