Description
The road bridge over the River Avon in Fordingbridge is a Grade II* listed structure, dating from the 14th or 15th century. It was widened around 1841 and refaced in 1901, with a cantilevered footway added to one side around 1960. The bridge is constructed of ironstone and features a widening and refacing in Chilmark stone. It has seven arches with rising approaches at each end. The bridge includes inner chamfered medieval arches, with large spurs added on each side to support the outer 19th-century chamfered depressed pointed arches. Above the arches, there is a raised string at road level and a parapet with weathered coping. Each end of the bridge's parapet is marked by an octagonal pier with a heavy cap and a corbel below on the outside. The approaches are flanked by stone retaining walls that have a similar parapet butting against the pier. On the north side, there is a late 20th-century walkway on concrete cantilevers that were integrated into the 19th-century widening.
