Description
The garden walls with gazebo and gateways at Dogmersfield Park date from the 18th century and early 19th century. This high-walled garden is designed symmetrically, though the central part is incomplete. The northern boundary features a tall red brick wall built in English bond with stepped plinths, which incorporates an early 19th-century gazebo that faces an open axis within the garden.
On the west side of the northern wall, there is a central gateway flanked by ornamental gateposts that hold wrought iron gates, with low side walls topped by rails and ending in piers. The eastern side has a smaller central gateway with plain piers at the ends of gently sloping walls. Further south, a high cross wall includes a central opening, with the walls curving down at the corners to simple piers. Two additional walls extend southward from the axis at equal distances. An isolated pier to the east of the middle section is topped with an urn.
The gazebo is the most prominent feature, showcasing a fine ashlar facade with two oval arches supported by a central Tuscan column and two half-columns on each side. Above the arches is a gable, adorned with small square pinnacles at each end and a larger square pinnacle in the center, featuring a design that includes dropping curves. Inside, the rectangular space provides seating on three sides and has a panelled ceiling. The gazebo's exterior on the north side extends beyond the main wall, constructed in Flemish bond brickwork.
