Description
Midways is a pair of cottages that have been combined into a single house, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, with alterations made in the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring some burnt headers, and has rendered gables. It has a thatched roof with eyebrow dormers, while the outshut is covered with Welsh slate. The external end stacks are made of rendered brick, with offsets and stepped tops.
The structure is one and a half storeys high and consists of two bays, with a rear outshut that was originally under a catslide roof. It has a slated plinth and chamfered wooden casement windows, which have horizontal glazing bars—two lights on the ground floor and three lights above. There are concrete steps leading up to the paired central doorways; the left doorway has been bricked up, while the right features a ledged plank door within a wooden frame and a gabled corrugated-iron porch. The ground-floor openings have rendered lintels, with all except the right-hand door having wedge lintels. The gables display visible purlin ends and rafters.
At the rear, the outshut includes two small two-light windows. Inside, there are plank doors, some dating from the 19th century. Each room on the ground floor has a brick floor, a wide infilled fireplace, and a re-used chamfered spine beam with run-out stops. The right room retains crudely-chamfered wany joists and older floorboards, while the outshut is under-ceiled with wide beaded planks.
