BAUGHURST BAUGHURST ROAD Baughurst War Memorial
II
War memorial to the fallen of the First and Second World Wars. 1920. The memorial consists of a stone cross surmounting a tapering shaft. This rises from an octagonal plinth set on a square: on five sides of the octagonal plinth are the names of those from Heath End and Baughurst who died in the First World War, while the square one carries a dedicatory inscription on three sides. The whole is set on a square three tiered base: a Second World War memorial tablet is set into the front face of the top step.
HISTORY: The memorial was erected on land donated in 1920 by a local landowner, Mr James Cox, and paid for by public subscription. Many of the names inscribed are those of families still living in the parish.
SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: War memorials have a very strong historical and cultural significance on both a local and a national scale. This is an attractive example of a simple memorial to the dead of two world wars. It was erected by public subscription following the donation of land by a local landowner, and still holds a place at the centre of the community.
