Description

The war memorial stands at the junction of Church Street and High Street in Easton on the Hill. Constructed of Wittering Pendle and Clipsham stone in 1920, it was designed by Henry Traylen. The memorial consists of a four-stepped base which supports an octagonal plinth, a tapering shaft, and a cross. Copper plaques are affixed to the sides of the plinth. These plaques bear inscriptions commemorating the men of Easton who died in the First World War (1914-1918), officers, non-commissioned officers, and men of the Royal Air Force who were killed in or near the village during 1918 and who died from natural causes, and those who died in the Second World War (1939-1945). These names are listed on the plaques. The memorial was funded by public subscription, following a village meeting in 1919, and the Marquis of Exeter donated gravel and stone while local men volunteered to construct it. It was unveiled on 5th May 1920 by the Marquess of Exeter and Major Davidson of the RAF. The memorial represents a simple, but elegant example of a village memorial situated in a prominent location, serving as an important architectural and historical reminder of local loss during both World Wars.
