Description
The Henstead with Hulver Street War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It was designed by William Douglas Caröe and constructed by Messrs Clary and Wright.
Made of Clipsham stone, the memorial is located in the village cemetery of Henstead, on the south side of Church Road, directly across from the south porch of the Church of St Mary, which is listed as Grade I.
The memorial features a tall, plain Latin cross with a square base that rests on a deep, square plinth. This plinth has incised inscription panels and stands on a two-stepped base. The main inscription, located on the north face of the cross base and plinth, is in incised lettering and reads: "THE / GREAT / WAR / HENSTEAD AND HULVER / ROLL OF HONOUR / THOSE WHO MADE THE / SUPREME SACRIFICE FOR / KING AND COUNTRY / RIP." The names of the fallen are recorded on the south, west, and east faces.
Additionally, a rectangular stone tablet is fixed to the north side of the stepped base, which bears the dedication for the Second World War, reading: "SECOND WORLD WAR / 1939 - 1945 / [Names]."
