Description

Hall Cottage is the surviving portion of a farmhouse that was later converted into estate cottages. The core of the building dates from the early to mid 17th century, with subsequent additions to the right replacing an earlier extension. Originally timber-framed, the house has been rebuilt in colourwashed brick and has a thatched roof. It is two storeys high with attics. The front elevation has two windows, featuring 3-light casements with pointed heads to the lights and square-leaded panes, all set within segmental arches. A central doorway has a 2-centre arched form and a boarded door. A gable end stack is located to the left, and to the right is a substantial external stack with two attached hexagonal flues. Inside, the ground and first floor rooms display exposed unchamfered joists. A newel staircase is present, with the flight leading to the attic being original. The roof structure is a clasped purlin roof, which incorporates arched wind-bracing.
