Description
Castle Lodge and gatepiers is an early 19th-century single-storeyed L-shaped vernacular dwelling, featuring a more stylish west elevation that faces the Castle. The building has a slate roof with brick dentil eaves and a gable in the form of a pediment on the west side. The walls are made of painted brick, with the west gable showcasing rustic quoins and a large keystone above the former central doorway, which is now filled in. The north side of the building has a projecting centrepiece that includes an arched doorway with a keystone, and the slate roof is partly obscured by a low parapet with a coping. The windows are sash style, and there is a half-glazed arched door. Attached to the north side of the building is one of a pair of gatepiers that serve as the entrance to the grounds of the Castle. Each pier is rusticated and square in plan, topped with a simple cornice that is capped by an urn. On the north side, facing the approach, the cornice extends above a carved bust or caryatid that rests on a tapered column.
