Description
The Funeral Chapel, built in the mid-19th century for the third Earl of Carnarvon by Thomas Allom, is an Early English style structure featuring three bays and a single cell. It is characterized by its exaggerated ornamentation and symmetrical elevations. The side elevations are topped with a roof made of scalloped blue tiles and an ornamental ridge. The walls are constructed from squared knapped flint with stone dressings, and include moulded eaves, deep chamfered frames around the lancet windows, a moulded cill band, a plinth, and stepped buttresses that are gabled at each end to meet the raised gable coping.
On the west elevation, there are three lancet windows, with the central one being taller, all set within hoodmoulds and supported by recessed columns on a raised cill band. The east front features a stone bell turret adorned with gables and gargoyles, which is supported by brackets and encloses a small arched opening. Below this turret is a wide doorway that consists of a Gothic arch with several recessed stages, resting on columns with moulded caps and bases. Inside, the chapel has an arch-braced timber roof and a floor that contains a central lettered tomb slab, flanked by a bank of stalls on each side, which exhibit French Gothic ornamentation. A secondary door is located in the west bay of the north elevation.
