Description

This is a milestone located on the A33 in Sherfield on Loddon, dating from the early 19th century. It is made of stone and has a semi-circular shape with a slanting top. The front of the milestone is inscribed with "Southampton 34," "Reading 12," and "Basingstoke 4." The Basingstoke and Reading Turnpike, which opened in 1718, features a series of milestones, of which this is a notable example due to its clear inscription.
