Description
The walled garden at The Walled Garden is a mid-19th century structure, consisting of two phases of construction and altered around 1900. It is primarily built of red brick in rat-trap bond, with some sections in irregular bonds and stone dressings. The garden has a near-trapezoidal shape, with the north wall curving at the eastern end. The wall stands approximately 3 metres high and features pilaster buttresses, flat coping, and square corner piers topped with pyramidal finials.
The south wall was the first to be constructed to screen the former stables from the house and is about 2 metres high, also in rat-trap bond. The other walls were built around 1860, with the entire structure heightened around 1900. The south wall includes two entrances with decorative iron gates; the western entrance has square piers with pyramid-and-ball finials, while the eastern entrance features square piers and a segmental arch made of alternating brick and stone voussoirs, with dropped keystones and ramped coping above.
The north wall has an entrance towards the eastern end, with a ramp leading down to it from the west, and vents at the top that were used for formerly-adjoining glasshouses. The west wall includes a board door beneath a flat brick arch, and the east wall has a gap cut at the north end. This garden is listed for its significance as part of the original surroundings of the conservatory and vine houses.
