Description

This milestone, located on the A33, dates from the early 19th century. It is made of stone and has a semi-circular shape with a slanting top. The front of the milestone is inscribed with the distances to Southampton (36 miles), Reading (10 miles), and Basingstoke (6 miles). It is part of a series of milestones along the Basingstoke and Reading Turnpike, which was opened in 1718. This milestone is a good example from its period, featuring a clear and legible inscription.
