Description

This milestone, located on the B3400, dates from the early 19th century. It is made of painted stone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone has a square plan with a rounded head. The cast-iron rectangular plate is inscribed with "London 52" and "Basingstoke 6", although the plate on the opposite side is missing. This milestone is part of a series along the Andover and Basingstoke turnpike, which was opened in 1754. It is a good example of an early 19th-century milestone with an inscribed cast-iron plate.
