Description
Berrydown Court House is a large house built in 1897-1898 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. It features a nearly symmetrical design on its longer north (entrance) and south (garden front) elevations, with two storeys and an attic. The north front has a central two-storey porch flanked by single-storey projecting wings that blend into the high walls surrounding the forecourt. The roof is hipped and covered with tiles, and there are tall, massive brick chimney stacks along with small flat-roofed dormers on the east side. The walls are roughcast, and a heavy timber beam forms the entrance, which has a quarry tile floor with a step.
The windows are square-leaded casements set in oak frames, with small two-light units on the ground floor and larger nine-light (east side) and seven-light (west side, with transoms) units beneath the eaves. The south front features a prominent centrepiece and forward-projecting wings, with the ground floor separated by lead-flat roofing above an arcade. The wide centre has two massive gables that meet in a high valley and is entirely tile-hung. The east wing includes a tile-hung gable that jetties above a two-storey bay, with pilasters framing a tile-hung first floor. The west wing, while breaking the symmetry, maintains a similar form with a tile-hung first floor.
All the extensive windows are leaded casements in oak frames, some with transoms, and a wide bay of nine units nearly fills the arcade on the ground floor. The facade is predominantly tile-hung, with recessed areas on each side of the centre that contain various windows and chimney stacks. The west elevation is asymmetrical and features a tall chimney stack. The original interior remains virtually unaltered. The garden surrounding the house was designed by Miss Jekyll.
