Description

This milestone, located on the B3400, dates from the early 19th century. It is made of painted stone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone is small with a rounded head, and the rectangular cast-iron plate is inscribed with the distances to London (53 miles) and Andover (11 miles). There is another plate on the opposite side, which is missing. This milestone is part of a series along the Andover and Basingstoke turnpike, which opened in 1754, and serves as a good example of an early 19th-century milestone with an inscribed cast-iron plate.
