HIGHCLERE, Milestone on A343 at NGR 439 611

Milestone. Late C18. Painted stone. Broached square base, cylindrical shaft and polygonal top. Inscribed: Sarum 30, Newbury 4 and Andover 12. The Andover and Chilton Pond turnpike was opened in 1766 and this is one of a series of similar milestones on the turnpike. An unusual example of a late C18 milestone.
