Description

This is a milestone located on the A343 in Highclere, dating from the late 18th century. It is made of painted stone and features a broached square base, a cylindrical shaft, and a polygonal top. The milestone is inscribed with the distances to Sarum (30 miles), Newbury (4 miles), and Andover (12 miles). It is part of a series of similar milestones along the Andover and Chilton Pond turnpike, which was opened in 1766. This milestone is noted as an unusual example from the late 18th century.
