Description

This is a milestone located on the A343 in Highclere, dating from the late 18th century. It is made of painted stone and features a broached square base, a cylindrical shaft, and a polygonal top. The milestone is inscribed with the distances to Sarum (31 miles), Newbury (3 miles), Andover (13 miles), and Oxford (29 miles). There is also a bench mark carved on the shaft. This milestone is part of a series along the Andover and Chilton Pond turnpike, which was opened in 1766, making it an unusual example of a late 18th-century milestone.
