Description

This milestone, located on the A339, dates from the early 19th century. It is made of painted stone and features cast-iron plates on two sides. The stone is roughly square and the plates are inscribed with the distances to Basingstoke (1 mile) and Alton (10 miles). The Basingstoke, Preston Candover, and Alton turnpike was opened in 1795. This milestone is a good example of early 19th-century roadside markers with inscribed cast-iron plates.
