Description

Skippetts House is a building with Tudor origins, dating from the 17th century, 18th century, and around 1900. The exterior is primarily from the 18th century, featuring both early and late phases. The north front has two storeys and an attic, originally symmetrical with five windows, though the eastern bay has been incorporated into a long north-south wing that projects forward and has two windows. The roof is covered with red tiles and has a half-hipped design, with two flat-roofed dormers that contain sash windows. The walls are now faced in cement, with a parapet that includes coping and a band on the older part, and a band at the first floor level. The sashes are set in reveals and feature old glass. There is a brick porch from the later period, which has an oval arched doorway and side windows. The lower east elevation displays irregular fenestration, with upper sashes and ground floor French lights. The south side has gabled ends that enclose an early 19th-century infill with a low-pitched hipped slate roof. The next elevation includes a circa 1900 extension with casement windows, which is connected to a tall structure made of red brick on a flint base, believed to be a former granary that has been re-converted, with steddles replaced. On the west side, there is a courtyard featuring a brick-surfaced ring surrounding a cast-iron fitting, which is the remains of a horse-gin used for raising water from the well.
