Description
Nos 26 and 26A on London Street is a building that now serves as a shop and offices. It dates from the late 16th century and has undergone later modifications. The structure features a timber front with plastered infills and a slated roof. It is two storeys high and has three bays, with the center bay being wider to allow for a cross passage to the right.
At the rear, there is a large addition from the 20th century. The building was originally jettied at the front, but this feature was removed in the 19th century when a new timber-framed facade was constructed in line with the ground floor wall. The facade includes arcuated cross-bracing between the studs, all of which is exposed. The ground floor has a 20th-century shopfront, while the first floor features a central oriel sash window flanked by single sash windows. The original frame's survival is limited to the first-floor structure, which includes stepped stop-chamfered joists and crosswall frames above. These incorporate a heavily-cambered tie beam that supports queen post trusses and clasped purlins.
