Description
This milestone, dating from the late 18th century, is located on the A30/A303 at approximately NGR 649 520 in Basingstoke. It is made of painted stone and has a triangular shape. The milestone is inscribed with the distances to London (45 miles), Basingstoke (half a mile), and Hartford Bridge (9 and a quarter miles). It marks the Basingstoke, Odiham, and Alton turnpikes established in 1755 and 1736. This milestone is a good example of late 18th-century road signage.
