EAST WOODHAY Woolton Hill CHURCH STREET War Memorial
06-FEB-08
GV II War memorial, presumably 1920s, designer unknown.
DESCRIPTION: the Woolton Hill War Memorial stands outside the churchyard of St Thomas' Church (Grade II) to the north-east of the Lych Gate. It comprises a tapering octagonal stone shaft moulded at the base. This stands on an inscribed stone plinth of octagonal plan, two high steps above two low steps. The inscription reads: In Thankful memory of the men/ of Woolton Hill, who gave their lives/ in the Great War 1914-1919/ (names)/ and those who fell/ in the World War 1939-1945/ (names). Attached to the centre of the cross is carved stone wreath. The war memorial is bordered to the south-east by wood and iron railings on a brick base. The wood and chain link fence to the north-east is not of special interest.
HISTORY: the date of erection is not known but is presumed early 1920s given its primary function as a memorial to the fallen of the First World War.
SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE The war memorial outside the churchyard of St Thomas' Church is designated at Grade II, for the following principal reasons:
- It is a simple yet carefully composed and executed memorial.
- It has additional historic interest in its commemoration of the men of Woolton Hill who died during the First and Second World Wars.
