Description

The house at East Woodhay, Woolton, is a timber-framed building dating to the 17th and 18th centuries, with a substantial rear extension added in 1939 and a boiler room in 1965. The original timber frame is exposed, featuring square panels, diagonal tension braces, and rendered infill. The roof is tiled and half-hipped, replacing what was originally thatch. A central 17th-century brick chimney stack remains externally, alongside a 20th-century brick chimney stack. The house has one storey and attics, with three windows. In 1939, the windows were replaced with metal casements featuring leaded lights, and three large gabled dormers were added. A 20th-century open timber-framed porch provides an entrance.

Inside, the southeastern ground floor room has a spine beam with a two-inch chamfer, although the floor joists were renewed in 1939, and a Tudor-style brick fireplace was inserted. The northwestern room combines what were originally two smaller rooms. It retains a spine beam with a two-inch chamfer and run-out stops, along with original floor joists. This room contains an open fireplace with a wooden bressumer, a bread oven, and possible remains of a staircase on the right. The roof structure includes a queenpost design with through purlins. The 20th-century brick extensions to the rear are not considered to be of particular architectural interest.
