Description
The South Wootton War Memorial is a war memorial erected around 1920, dedicated to those who fell in the First World War. It has a square plan and is constructed of stone, featuring a Latin cross atop a tall tapered shaft, a square plinth, and a three-stepped base. Originally, the inscription was incised directly into the stone of the plinth, but in around 2011, polished stone plaques with inscribed and painted lettering were added. The plaque on the north side of the plinth reads: ‘IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / OUR FALLEN HEROES / OF SOUTH WOOTTON / 1914 – 1918’. The names of the nine fallen are inscribed on the west side of the plinth. The memorial is prominently located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, which is listed at Grade II*, and is adjacent to the path from Church Lane.
