Description
The Hunstanton War Memorial is a war memorial erected in 1921, dedicated to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. It is made of Portland stone and has a rectangular-plan cenotaph on a two-stepped base. The south-west elevation, which faces the sea, features a bronze wreath and ribbon along with the inscription: ‘1914 - 1918 / TO / OUR GLORIOUS / DEAD’. The south-east elevation displays the dates of the First World War and the names of 53 fallen soldiers. The north-west elevation is inscribed with the dates of the Second World War, ‘1939 – 1945’, and the names of 15 fallen soldiers. The north-east elevation includes the inscription: ‘EVEN / IN / PEACE / 1949 (Name) / 1979 / (Name)’. The memorial is located in the Esplanade Gardens, west of Cliff Parade (B1161) in Hunstanton, and is surrounded by paving that was renewed in 2010.
