Description
The gymnasium at Smithdon School is a school building constructed between 1950 and 1954, designed by architects Alison and Peter Smithson. It features a steel frame with buff sandlime brick infill and has a flat roof. The structure is a freestanding, symmetrical block that stands one tall storey high. The upper part of the wall is marked by a horizontal division and is taller in proportion than the lower floor. The ends of the building have obscured solid panels, while the long side consists of nine bays, with the end bays being broader than the central seven bays, which are fully glazed. A later addition, a swimming pool, is attached to the gymnasium but is not considered of special interest. The gymnasium is an important part of the school.
