Description
The barn at Top Farm, located approximately 15 metres to the north-west of the house, dates from the 17th century and has been altered over time. It features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding set on a brick plinth, topped with a corrugated iron roof that has replaced the original thatch. The structure consists of three bays with an added rear aisle. A central cart entrance is fitted with a double board door.
Inside, the barn has large scantling wall posts, which are jowelled at the cart entry and unjowelled at the ends. There are mortices in the horizontal timbers that suggest the presence of former studs. The interior also includes straight braces connecting the wall posts to the tie-beams, collared queen-post roof trusses, clasped through purlins, old rafters, and straight wind-braces. Additionally, the mortices in the rails may indicate that the barn originally featured wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill in the panels.
