Description

This is a First World War memorial, likely erected in 1922. It is situated on the east side of Ecchinswell Road, opposite the village hall. The memorial is constructed from rough-hewn granite with lead lettering. It takes the form of a Latin cross raised upon a tapered plinth set on a shallow base. The west face of the cross shaft features a circular recessed panel containing a small cross and the dates and initials ‘1914-1919/ RIP’ in lead. The granite of the plinth is smoothed to display the names of the 21 men lost in the First World War. On the east face of the plinth, beneath the dates ‘1939-1945’, a recessed panel lists the names of the five men lost in the Second World War in lead lettering. The memorial stands within a square plot now enclosed by a shallow kerb.
