Description

The Church of St Lawrence, built in 1886 by Bodley and Garner, is designed in the Decorated style. The nave and chancel are aligned in one line, with aisles on either side and a raised tower at the south-west corner. The building features a continuous tile roof that slopes lower above the aisles at a slightly lesser angle. The walls are constructed of knapped flint with Bathstone dressings, and include decorative elements such as eaves fascia with brackets, banding in the west gables and tower, stepped buttresses, a cill band at the west end, quoins, a plinth, and the external facet of the half-hexagon tower stair turret. Windows include small cusped and ogee-headed lights, coupled lights with reticulated heads, and traceried windows at each end. The entrance is located at the base of the tower, which has a square boarded belfry stage topped with a plain shingled spire. Inside, there are two arches connecting the nave to the aisles and the chancel to the south chapel, with a low doorway in the plain wall between these sections. The choir is accessed through a wooden screen. The north aisle extends eastward into an organ chamber and vestry. A 'Perpendicular' font features a wooden cover suspended from a decorative wrought-iron bracket. The interior details are simple, showcasing octagonal columns and pointed arches in three stages.
