Description
Hawkridge Cottage at Perrylands Farm is a cottage built around 1800, as shown on an 1817 map. It is constructed of red brick in either Flemish bond or stretcher bond, with the south elevation primarily tile-hung. The roof is hipped to the north and features an external brick stack on the south side. The cottage is two storeys tall and has one window, which consists mainly of triple metal leaded lights with a cambered architrave. There is a doorcase in a set-back lean-to extension that was added after 1874 to the north.
Inside, the ground floor is paved with brick and includes an open fireplace with a wooden lintel and adjoining wooden cupboards. There is also a square brick copper and a ceramic sink, a straight flight staircase, and timber partitions leading to the upper floors. The roof structure includes clasped purlins, a collar beam, and a ridgepiece, with some rafters having been renewed. The south wall features brickwork from around 1800, indicating that the building is a complete structure rather than half of a pair. This cottage represents a type of agricultural labourer's dwelling that is becoming rare, and it retains an unusually complete interior.
