Description

Newhaven Downs Hospital is a workhouse that has been converted into a hospital, built around 1835. The building features a rendered exterior that is grooved to resemble ashlar stone, with overhanging eaves and a slate roof. It is a square block facing northeast and consists of three storeys with eight bays.

On the second floor, there are segmental-headed openings with 12-pane sash windows, although the third and sixth bays are blocked. The first floor has square-headed 16-pane sash windows, with the third bay also blocked. The ground floor includes square-headed 20-pane sash windows, with the glazing bars removed in the fourth bay. There are entrances in the third and sixth bays, featuring semi-circular headed openings with fanlights and plank doors, which are obscured by flat-roofed porches added in the late 19th or early 20th century.

The right side of the building retains its original, though irregular, window arrangement, while other elevations have been altered or obscured by later additions.
