Description
The memorial to Captain James Hanson and the crew of HMS Brazen is an obelisk monument located on Church Hill in Newhaven, dated 1800. It is constructed from ashlar stone and features slate panels along with cast-iron railings. The memorial stands about 2 meters high and is designed with seaweed and shells above the slate panels, which are inscribed with details of the wreck of HMS Brazen. The ship foundered off the cliffs of Newhaven on the night of January 20th, 1800, resulting in the loss of all lives except one. The bodies of Captain Hanson and 75 of the 104 men lost are interred in the nearby graveyard. Captain Hanson had previously served under Captain Vancouver during his notable voyage from 1791 to 1794, which included circumnavigating the globe and charting parts of North America. Many of the place names established during that voyage remain, although Hanson Point has since been destroyed.
