Description

The Carpenter's Shop and Paint Store with Timber Seasoning Shed is a building dating from around 1885, originally constructed for the London Brighton and South Coast Railway. It is made of yellow brick with red brick dressings and features a Turnerised roof with skylights. The timber-framed seasoning shed has a corrugated iron roof.

The structure is a single-storey block divided into two unequal parts. The carpenter's shop is accessed from the north gable end, while the paint store is entered through a small addition with a catslide roof on the south front. The timber seasoning shed is located at the angle behind on the east front. The yellow brick exterior includes recessed panels in the window bays and a linked entablature in red brick. The windows are round-headed, fixed light windows made of cast iron, with 20 panes each. The west front has six bays, and the north front features a lunette in the gable end, segmental-headed double doors with a wicket gate flanked by windows. The south front has a lunette in the gable end and a two-window facade with an entrance in the addition to the right. The east front includes a two-storey timber seasoning shed, which was noted to be in poor condition at the time of the survey in May 1989. This building is part of the marine workshops for the Port Station.
