Description

Langthorne Hospital, originally known as the West Ham Union Workhouse, is a former workhouse that has been converted into a hospital. Built in 1840, it features stock brick, white brick, and some stucco dressings. The building has a low-pitched slate roof with parapets on the projecting bays and stands three storeys tall, comprising 19 bays. The central section is an advanced giant pilastered centerpiece of three bays with splayed sides, a pediment, and a clock. The end bays are also advanced and pedimented, with giant pilasters extending through the first and second floors. The fifth and fifteenth bays are similarly advanced, featuring pedimental blocking courses. The central entrance is tripartite and pilastered, adorned with a stucco architrave that extends to a tripartite window above and to the clock. Other projecting bays have similar stucco architraves and rusticated brick quoins. The windows are segmental-headed, set in segmental reveals in the advanced bays, and are fitted with sash, plate glass.
