Description

Leyton Public Library is a public library built in 1881 by John Knight. It is constructed of gault brick with stone dressings and features a low slate roof, complemented by a tall slated pavilion roof at the corner. The library occupies a prominent corner site with an entrance at the base of a low tower. The architectural style is Victorian eclectic.

Facing High Road Leyton, the building has three storeys and five bays, with a lower two-storey bay to the right that includes an additional entrance. The doorways are Corinthian pilastered and pedimented. The windows are square-headed with architraves, and the ground floor windows are pedimented with incised decoration on the lintels. The windows are sash style with plate glass. There are cornices between the storeys and a main console cornice above the second floor.

The return elevation to Ruckholt Road has a similar decorative treatment but features an irregular window pattern. The roofs are adorned with decorative iron cresting. The library is part of the Leyton Town Hall complex and is included for its group value.
