Description
Etloe House is a substantial house dating from around 1760-70, which was later refronted in the early 19th century. It is constructed of stucco with a slate roof. The house presents a symmetrical facade, featuring a three-bay central section with a three-bay two-storey wing on either side, which are slightly recessed. The central bay is slightly advanced and topped with a low crenellated gable. A projecting porch, featuring corner buttresses and a battlemented parapet that curves up over a depressed gable, sits centrally; it has a pointed arched entrance and dripmouldings, along with pinnacles. The windows are square-headed, with one, two, or three lights, each with dripmoulds and plate glass. The building is finished with a crenellated parapet and ogee domed finials to the octagonal corner buttresses of the central section. The rear facade retains its 18th-century character. Inside, there is an 18th-century staircase and some early 19th-century painted glass. Etloe House was once the residence of William Bowyer (1699-1777), a friend of Dr Johnson and the proprietor of The Gentleman’s Magazine, and also of Cardinal Wiseman.
