Description

The Parish Church of Emmanuel, located at 251 Lea Bridge Road in Leyton, was built between 1934 and 1935 by architects Martin Travers and T. F. W Grant. The church features a brown brick exterior and a low-pitched roof covered with concrete tiles, which was originally copper. It has a three-bay nave with aisles that lead to an aisleless chancel, and a north-west porch. The design is stripped and almost styleless, with mullioned windows that have segmental-headed cuspless lights, two-light clerestory windows, and a five-light window at the west end. The east window is circular. The entrances have segmental and square-headed stone architraves, adorned with simplified volutes and cherubs carved in relief.

Inside, the church has depressed arcade arches supported by capitalless square piers, a western gallery, and a barrel ceiling with exposed timber tie beams. The reredos, altar rail, font, and other furnishings were all designed by the architect.
