Description
Walnut Tree House is a substantial detached house located on the east side of High Road in Leyton, dating from the mid-16th century or earlier, and has been restored. The exterior features stuccoed timber-framing and a hipped tiled roof with eaves, rising to two storeys. The front is jettied and consists of eight windows with sash designs and flush frames. There is a central doorway that is framed by a Doric columned porch with a cornice, likely dating from around 1800, which leads to double doors. The returns of the house are also jettied.
Inside, the house is understood to contain an early 18th-century staircase featuring three balusters per tread, with carved tread ends, a ramped handrail, and a panelled dado. There are two 16th-century fireplaces on the ground floor and one on the first floor, the latter adorned with a carved frieze. The interior also showcases exposed ceiling beams and some 18th-century panelling.
